2020.09.21 04:46 vision_noob I work in a department where its predominantly data analyst but I’m the only one doing computer vision. Need advice(very serious)

Currently I’m an intern at a startup where most work being done here is mostly on data visualisation, analysis and for some odd reason I got hired to do CV tasks like object tracking, Visual slam, OCR not that I’m complaining but I feel left out from the team. During our daily meetings, each one of us would update our progress made so far. and whenever it’s my turn, they usually don’t have an idea what I’m doing not even my boss. They don’t know if I’m progressing or slacking lmfao. It’s a very lonely experience so far. I’m doing things completely different from the rest of the team. Reddit is my goto whenever I’m stuck with my project cuz no one in my department knows abt CV. Initially wanted to get a job here because the pay is really good and there’s no other company doing cv in my country. 3 months in, I feel i don’t belong to the company and I’m starting to feel burnt out. Some part of me wants to get a job here because it’s the only way i could get a professional experience in CV in my country. Currently I’ve two options,
1) to seek for employment after internship ends and get industry experience plus good $$. 2) to pursue masters in CV and work as a graduate research assistant part time to earn $. Pay is not great compared to the option 1.

2020.09.21 04:40 library-stats Risk ratio - relative risk - rate ratio - prevalence ratio - Are these the same thing??

Hello! I am part of a team doing a retrospective cohort study of college students who received in-class library instruction (LI) from a librarian. We are looking at whether or not students who received LI are more likely to be retained in the following semester and also the following year.
I am a librarian, not a statistician, so I am a little out of my depth here. I have been working with a stats tutor at our college, but I'm still a bit confused about a few things and was hoping someone could help point me in the right direction.
We examined our data in several different ways:
All our stats analysis was done using R. We used the REdaS and fmsb packages and ran the following:
My table for odds ratio looks like this:
Yes LI No LI
Retained XXXX YYYY
Not Retained ZZZZ AAAA
When I run the risk ratio, my table comes out like this:
Disease Non-Disease
Non-Exposed YYYY AAAA
I have several questions about all of this.
  1. Do I understand/am I expressing correctly what the different tests are calculating?
  2. Am I using the correct R functions?
  3. Are my tables set up correctly?
  4. How can I explain to my audience (also librarians, not statisticians) that the "risk ratio" shows that students are X% more likely to be retained with LI while also calling that a "risk"? I think that will be very confusing since the word "risk" carries a negative connotation, but retention is a positive outcome.
    1. Should I swap my terms so that the non-retained students go in the "Disease" column?
    2. Alternately, would it be correct to refer to these figures as the "rate ratio" or "prevalence ratio," either of which might be less confusing since they don't have a negative connotation?
    3. Are you aware of any professional statistics literature I could refer to to explain what these tests are and how they work, especially the risk ratio (or whatever else I may call it)? Most of the literature I am finding is from the medical field (epidemiology, specifically) and the term "risk" is definitely appropriate there.
Here are the sources we are citing so far to explain our stats:
I am considering using something from the following for the risk ratio section:

2020.09.21 04:30 barringtonp The key difference between the Star Trek timeline and ours is they don't have Star Trek

We see few glimpses of different periods of the 20th century and they're mostly the same as our timeline. That implies most of the time travel shenanigans worked out in the long run. Changes before the 50's or 60's should have led to a different society when they went back to the 80's and 90's. There seem to be more noticeable differences going into the 21st century. No one built the Millennium Gate, though were getting back on track for the Bell riots.
I think the difference is that the Star Trek timeline didn't have the Star Trek TV show.
Countless people we never inspired to be scientists, engineers or astronauts. How many didn't see a future where women or people of colour were respected and treated as equals.
That's why some aspects of TOS and even TNG technology seem less advanced than ours, the people that would have invented them went on to be bus drivers or doctors instead. Other technology borders on magic because not everyone is inspired by Star Trek.
In TOS, vast amounts of information is stored on data tapes and the computer makes noise when its working, its like they didn't figure out solid state storage until the 24th century. In TNG the Enterprise has a giant central computer that operates every part of the ship with zero lag but you still have to physically hand in reports to Riker.
Zefram Cochrane doesn't give a shit about sci-fi so he still invented the warp drive.

2020.09.21 04:29 Poison_Penis VLOOKUP Bug, all results stuck on first row result when dragging/copy paste

I'm on Excel 2016, and I just did a VLOOKUP on some of my data.
A 1
B 2
C 3
Here's the weird bit. The formula works perfectly fine for the first row, but when I copy formula for all the other rows the vlookup results are stuck on the first row like this. And yes, I did remember to $lock the table reference. I thought my formula was wrong, but the weirdest thing is that it works if I type in the formulas row by row, but it doesn't work when I copy and paste or drag the formula down.
VLOOKUP results
A 1
B 1
C 1
Should have been:
A 1
B 2
C 3
What did I do wrong? Or is it a bug? The same thing happened when I copied the data onto a blank spreadsheet and repeated this. No amount of refreshing the book did anything at all.

2020.09.21 04:29 Intelligenesis Long term (4+ years) severe chronic idiopathic pancreatitis 20F. Any tips/theories/anecdotes?

This will be a long post. If it is too much to read through, no worries, I know it's a ton. Also, sorry for any mistakes or obvious misunderstanding from me. I am not a doctor and have limited medical knowledge currently. Everything I know was researched on my own time by myself, but I will try to be as concise and informative as I can!
This is not for me, but for someone I am very close to, which I will refer to as HM. HM is 20 years old, and has been suffering from pancreatitis for over 4 years now, with no clues or fixes. HM does not drink, does not smoke cigarettes, and is not obese. HM is approximately 5'6" at around 130lbs. HM was heavier towards the start of the disease, but lost around 25-30lbs throughout the course due to nausea, vomiting, and lack of appetite due to pain. HM is on birth control, the kind that is put into her arm (not exactly sure what this is called). HM is white (like 98% according to her 23&me), and has lived in the US all 20 years. HM is not very active, but occasionally goes on walks or does a workout at a gym once every week or two, but not very consistently. In my opinion, HM lives a fairly sedentary lifestyle, with a little too much netflix than the average person should watch despite recommendations from others to be more active. HM has a decent diet, but not the best. She has been trying to limit all processed foods and high sugar consumption, and is decent at avoiding the bad foods. HM is unable to eat meats, and can only tolerate fish. Other meats, especially red meat and chicken, triggers extremely bad abdominal pain and typically will result in a trip to the ER. I haven't seen too much linking this meat intolerance to pancreatitis, but I guess everyone is a little bit different. This meat intolerance developed around the same time that her pancreatitis got worse.
Her symptoms are nearly a textbook case of pancreatitis. It includes very bad, immobilizing pain flares daily, especially after meals. This is always accompanied by severe nausea and vomiting. Usually there is also some severe bloating as well. Imaging has always been unremarkable, with no damage to any of the organs noticed over the entire time of this disease. It has been progressively getting worse, as towards the start it was spread out between episodes, now it is a daily occurrence. There have been many ER visits throughout these years, and all end with IV fluids, pain medication, and a note saying to go see a GI again. Lots of GI issues throughout the years. We have removed gluten to try and see if it helps with "leaky gut" but nothing really changed. HM has had lots of diarrhea, constipation, and loose/greasy stools. This sort of got referred to as IBS by all the doctors, but no solutions have been suggested to us.
HM has had many diagnostic tests done over the years. Many CT scans, which always end up negative. There has been two MRCPs done, one of which was with secretin, which was also normal and they were able to rule out pancreas divisum. HM has had a gastric emptying test done, which also was shown normal. Ultrasounds have always been normal. There was an EUS done, nothing of interest was found. ERCP found nothing. Colonoscopy found nothing. One study found possible microlithiases, and after that her gallbladder was removed as the providers thought this was the solution. There was a slight decrease in pain severity following the surgery, but around 2 weeks later the pain started ramping back up again. The doctors said this was normal post surgery and it would likely get better as time goes on. It did not, and this surgery was done roughly 2 years ago. She has never undergone any biopsies of the pancreas, and to my knowledge, they did not find anything on the pancreas when they removed her gallbladder.
Lab tests have confirmed pancreatitis. Lipase levels are usually always elevated, especially in the case of ER admissions. The highest lipase levels shown in labs was 5,827 u/L. Second highest was 3,500 u/L. The average is usually 500-1000 u/L. Amylase was typically within normal limits, but was not always pulled as most of the doctors would only go off the lipase elevation. CRP was typically elevated as well, but that did not really help us much as it seems to be non specific. Cytomegalovirus antibody and EBV testing show positive, but could not differentiate between active or past infections. When testing for autoimmune antibodies, it appears to be negative. No monoclonal proteins were detected, IgA, IgG, and IgM were all in range. Thyroid tests have always been normal. Occasionally there would be something showing high or low on testing, such as in the CBC or AST levels, but they would always appear normal on the next lab draw. Lots and lots of blood draws have occurred over the years.
She has had on occasion high glucose levels, but has never had a specific diabetes test. It is tough to see though, as going over 4 years of lab draws without knowing which tests were done fasted isn't the most accurate representation. Her most recent stool tests have began to show pancreatic insufficiency though, which is scary as its showing progression that was never seen before. Because of this, her naturopath has started HM on digestive enzymes. She is currently taking Integrative Therapeutics brand "Similase", as her intolerance to meat products produced bad reactions when she took the pork based enzymes. This supplement along with Vitamin D, has been taken by HM for around the last 2 months, and no noticeable changes have been observed. These are the only two supplements HM is taking at this time.
HM does not like to take pain pills and refuses to take them, as her mother suffers from opioids addiction from presumably the same pancreatitis issue. HM instead has instead been utilizing weed use at nights, as this is the only alternative found to bring the pain down enough to be able to keep down food, and to be able to go to sleep. HM's mother had her first occurrence of probable pancreatitis at roughly 19 years old, while being pregnant with HM. This was caused by gallstones, and HM's mother had her gallbladder removed shortly after giving birth. This did not end her attacks though, and she had other surgeries which included stent placements. HM's mother also suffers from chronic alcoholism, and presumably other drug addictions besides opiates, but her pancreatitis symptoms severity and frequency is very minimal compared to HM.
HM did not start using weed until after the attacks started to get worse, around 1 year into her disease. Because of this, we do not think these symptoms are caused by cannabis hyperemesis syndrome. Unfortunately, HM has been unable to take a break from weed to see if any symptoms get better, because without it she is unable to hold down food or sleep. Her sleep is already suboptimal, with lots of awakenings through the night. She also suffers from PTSD, which also negatively impacts her sleep quality and quantity. She also deals with a great amount of stress in life, and despite many pleas to try to work on this, HM has not been able to find any stress reduction techniques that have helped her in any way.
HM has a decent diet, and we have tried many different suggestions over the years. Towards the start, the diet was pretty terrible, but we have slowly shifted towards cutting out processed/fast foods, high sugar foods, smarter caffeine consumption, and healthier alternatives. During this, we have tried a low-fat diet, alkaline diet, gluten free diet, and a few variations of strict anti-inflammatory diets. We have also done food sensitivity testing, and removed the "sensitive" foods. We also tried the "Meyers Way Diet" from the book "The Autoimmune Solution" by Amy Meyers. This is a restrictive anti inflammatory diet on the functional medicine side. None have made a noticeable change in HM's symptoms or pain levels. HM also attempted to do a prolonged fast to see if any changes happen, but the pain was unusually intense early on in the day, and the fast was broken around 20 hours into it. HM typically eats close to bed, as this is when she can use weed to be able to hold food down. Anytime HM eats earlier in the day, it is either a very miniscule amount of food, or she will not be able to hold it down and will get sick. HM usually would have a fairy high amount of caffeine throughout the day, but in an effort to maximize her sleep, we now limit it to one caffeinated drink per day before 11:00AM.
HM has seen many specialists over the years. Starting with a few nurse practitioners and primary care doctors, we were then sent to some GI doctors in our state. We have also seen 2 naturopathic and functional medicine doctors. We have seen a team in the Seattle children's hospital, which ended with them thinking it was sicklick vomiting syndrome and IBS+D. They did not provide anymore insight or possible therapeutic fixes to these though, and HM then aged out and would not be seen by that doctor again. More recently, we have seen doctors at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. They too did not find any insight for us, and nearly all of the professionals we saw claimed their only intervention at this point would be a total pancreatomy, which we would like to avoid until a last resort. They also were quick to rule out autoimmune pancreatitis, saying that both type 1 and type 2 would be shown by either the imaging or the IgG labs which were all negative. She has never tried a steroid trial to see, as her doctors said that taking steroids such as prednisolone would do more harm than good.
HM also suffers from a few other conditions, which have all started after the pancreatitis has progressed. HM has allergies, and they continue to bother her. Most notably, to cats and to dog saliva, which is tough because she lives with multiple of both and loves them too much to think of being without them. HM also has been having some neurological symptoms, including memory issues, constant brain fog, and intense migraines. These may be attributed to the disrupted sleep cycle, and are like a negative feedback loop that consistently make each other worse. Also it could be noted that chronic weed use could disrupt the sleep type throughout the night, and impede on her REM sleep. HM has been very fatigued, and her naturopath has noticed an adrenal fatigue, probably do to the stress of this painful chronic condition, as well as HM's very stressful life with poor coping mechanisms. This has not been addressed yet either. Another condition that came up is a chronically enlarged lymph node in her neck. This has been there for nearly two years. She had an FNA done, which testing negative but they could not rule out everything. Because of this, they did an excisional biopsy, but her ENT apparently did not even remove it. He was not really good ENT and was fairly rude, so we have not seen him again. We have not been able to address this again, because the pancreas has been so active lately that it has been our priority.
HM has seen multiple pain management doctors and a sleep doctor as well. These both have not led us to any new solutions. The only options we were given were a nerve blocker, which was stopped as another doctor told us that it could be linked towards increasing the risk of developing dementia. The other prescription was an adrenaline blocker, which was meant to help HM to sleep throughout the night. We did not take this one, as sleep is a very complex and mysterious activity, and I did not want to mess with it too much. Interference with something so critical when the doctor wasn't sure if it would help much did not seem like the right thing to do, which was also the opinion of her naturopath. We have tried hydrotherapy for her pancreas, which was done by a professional function medicine doctor who has been involved in multiple studies about it, but in our case it did not help HM with her symptoms.
We have also done some genetic testing through 23andme. There was not too much on her report that would be relevant to her condition, so we put her raw data through some other tools and looked through SNPedia and found a few other possible relevant genes. These include
The two PRSS1 mutations were not really common according to the doctor in the Cleveland clinic, and he said he was not very familiar with them as they are not the prominent disease linked genes. I did not see any mutations in KCNA3, PSTI, PRSS2, R122C, A16V, CTRC, SPINK1, SERPING1, or F12 while looking through the raw data.
I am not sure where we can go next. Everything has led to a dead end. I have looked into other types of medicine, supplements, peptides, IV therapies, breathwork, etc., but have been left with nothing showing any promise. We have seen so many doctors all over in all different areas of medicine, and haven't made any progress to understanding what is going on. Given the fact that HM's mom has had pancreatitis as well, and the two PRSS1 variants noticed on HM's genetic data, it looks like the best theory would be hereditary pancreatitis. Is there anything we can try to attempt to reduce these symptoms? Is a total pancreatomy the only solution at this point? Also I am sure I have forgotten some information in this post. It is a lot to cover and try to remember, so if someone needs some more info relevant to this let me know! I would greatly appreciate any suggestions for future treatments/supplements/therapies that may show some promise and are worth me looking into.
Things that HM has been interested in trying for alternative therapy
If you made it this far, thank you for reading through this! I appreciate any feedback or tips! Anything relevant would be great. Thank you! While reading the rules of the sub, it says I need to have a specific medical question. Mine is, do we need to remove the pancreas? Or is there anything else that we can exhaust before this last resort surgery?

2020.09.21 04:28 MissBonny UPDATE: I [25f] want to show my BF [31M] of 8 months appreciation for being there for me during a rough time, but I'm not sure how.

Original post can be found here.
Hi, relationships! My post didn't get very many likes when I originally submitted it, but I always like getting updates on posts, so here it is.
The day I [now 27F] posted this, I showed it to my then-boyfriend [now 33M], who laughed and then looked confused and reminded me of all the times I had been there for him when he was feeling stressed, especially with deadlines at work or when his experiments were yielding bad data (he's a scientist). He appreciated that I was so concerned, but also reminded me that he was glad he could be there for me when I was stressed and he didn't see it as a burden and asked if I saw being there for HIM as a burden. That got me to see how ridiculous I sounded.
About three weeks after I wrote this post, my then-boyfriend proposed and about 8 months after that, we got married. It was the most perfect day ever and I wish I could relive it. We've now been married almost 10 months and I just love him more and more each day. He's currently conked out on the couch after making us a wonderful dinner and doing things for work all day.
I don't have much to add because we are honestly so happy and content with our little life together. I know that we will be able to get through anything because we have each other.
I want to give a special thanks to u/Background_Tangerine for listening to me and giving me some really useful advice and reassurance. It helped me put a lot in perspective. Thank you so much!
Also, shoutout to everyone who originally commented, telling me that food and sex is the best way to show appreciation. Message received loud and clear.
TLDR: BF didn't think I was annoying at all and reminded me that I've been there for him when he's been through hard times, too. We got engaged a month after I posted this, married 8 months later, just totally and completely in love with each other to this day, with no sign of it stopping.

2020.09.21 04:26 faste30 Chrome saying "no internet connection" while working just fine? On Android 11

Its not 100% but most of the time now my chrome browser has a black banner with white text at the top that says "no internet connection" while internet is working just fine. Tried clearing cache then data, force stopping, rebooting phone, turning off lite mode, etc.
Its more of an annoyance because its there and it takes up the top bit of screen but hoping maybe someone else got it and figured out how to get rid of it.

2020.09.21 04:24 benchjeweler1 pm makes it impossible to leave

Hey all,
I have decided to leave protonmails paid accounts and migrate to another solution. I was suprised to learn that you cant downgrade or cancel your subscription without first deleting all your data. This is damn near impossible when youre dealing with close to 60k emails. I'm really frustrated right now. If anyone knows of a way to delete all the messages quickly instead of 50 at a time i'd love the advice. thanks in advance.

edit: for those who have dm'ed or replied disbelieving that there is no easy way to delete your account. here is what proton replied to me: I also, had to reply to this reply of theirs and state that i wasnt trying to downgrade but delete my account entirely. No luck as to a solution.

2020.09.21 04:24 oneyedcheshire Looking for a high quality laptop (neuroscientist, artist, no gaming needs)

Hey all!
After 7 years of wonderful service, my 2013 Macbook Pro is on it's way out (seems like a GPU issue, if I shut the computer off it won't allow me to log back in, or enter recovery mode.) I was able to log in on a fluke after leaving the computer alone for a day, and want to back up my data and replace the computer ASAP.
I work as a neuroscientist. I need a computer that can run a large database without major problems, plus I figure I'll have to use other programs and image analysis software in the next few years. I've enjoyed the 15 inch screen and retina display on my current computer, since I shoot film in my spare time and like editing scans on my computer. I don't game or do much else on the computer except use the word processor and watch TV. Happy to spend a good amount on the right machine.
Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: I'd prefer to spend less than $2,000.00 USD, but am open to going above that for a great computer.
Are you open to refurbs/used? No, looking for a new computer.
How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Form factor is not that important to me. A big screen is nice, I also see pros to a smaller screen (mobility). Build quality and performance are extremely important. I want something that will work reliably and well for a long time. Battery life is not as crucial, I always bring my charger along for the ride.
How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important.
Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Big screen would be cool.
Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I use photoshop regularly. I run a large database for work on a near daily basis.
If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not a gamer, N/A!
Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Couldn't care less about touch screen or finger print reader. Just need a good workhorse computer. Having a USB drive is a huge plus.

2020.09.21 04:24 justasking1971 What's the best way to handle my situation?

I had a situation, a midlife break, my world collapsed, lost my family, I resigned from a tenured position, got arrested, lost my professional license, and had a twisted story about my situation in the newspaper (annoyingly almost a year after my collapse). I am not here to rehash how bad I destroyed my world or to argue fault. I am going to ask about looking forward and moving on. The arrests were misdemeanors non violent offenses, I was never charged or convicted. I was given a deal where my records were essentially expunged if I did a few things, which I successfully did. The news story about me is slanted quiet negative and makes it look like my behavior was more current than what happened.
I am not going into academics. And I am looking for work that uses my research and data analysis skills outside of academics. and I believe I have some really strong and valuable skills to offer a company especially with research projects and evaluations. my teaching experience also could qualify me for training type jobs. But I'm scared that my past will follow me and I will never be able to work again. what I want to know from this HR sub is 1. Will my arrest show up if I have no charges or conviction? 2. The news article makes me look very bad and like most articles it's without context. I live in a small town usa and the collapse of a prof at the university despite being old news was seen as reportable 3. What do former employers tend to say. I know in the usa they can technically say whatever they want but I have read they play it safe and say he worked here from this time to this time. 4. How far would the employer check. There is some stuff in my file at the university but only accessible through an open records request. 5. I have spent the last year and a half improving and learning. Taking the correct steps to be healthy and well. Is that worth anything to an employer who discovers my story? 6. If I do get hired somewhere and the news article does not surface at the time but gets noticed two years into my job where I've been performing above any expectations (this happened to me I landed a job at an online university and they found the article a year later and called me and told me they had lost confidence in my ability to do my job and then pretty much hung up). 7. My dream would be to sit in that backroom designing and carrying out research projects or analyzing data to make improvements. Is there hope for me or am I doomed to be unemployed for a very long time?

The UK and Germany have signed the momentous decision to form the United States of Europe. UK Prime Minister Joris Bonson and German Chancellor [insert name here] ceremoniously signing the document dissolving the UK and Germany. In its place, the United States of Europe has been born. Although the current members count is currently two, talks have already been ongoing with France, Italy, and to a lesser degree Sepharad, Raetia, and even Austria.
The territory of Germany and the UK will be subdivided along existing administrative lines into states of roughly 5-10 million inhabitants. This follows closely to the proposed "Heineken model" of comparably sized states, although the actual lines have been drawn somewhat differently.
The United States of Europe will operate under a federal structure, with much of the day-to-day decision making centralized in the federal government. State governments act largely as in a supervisory role, which will avoid complicated webs of differing laws and "state-pandering" that plagued the United States of America.

IMAGE: States of the United States of Europe

Each state will chose their own head of state, in a manner decided by that specific state. The role and power of a head of state depends on the state, but always pertains to state-level governance. Depending on the situation, a single person can be head of state of multiple states. For example, most German-originating states retain their "Friedrich Constition"-determined head of state, such as the Head of house Hohenzollern in most of the "Neo-Prussian states", and conventional democratic governors in the Hanseatic states. As a result of this decision, there is no singular head of state of the United States of Europe, but a multitude of people filling that role simultaneously, to varying degrees.
The federal government centers around a bicameral legislature, the States-General, which consists of the Upper House and the Lower House. The members of the Upper House are elected by the state-level governments, with the number of representatives corresponding the state's population. The Lower House is elected directly by the people via party-list proportional representation.

The United States of Europe maintains several "Non-federal territories", which exist mostly outside of the federal structure. This includes the UK Caribbean Territories, Germany and UK's Antarctic claims, and other overseas territories. Exact status of these territories differs on a case-to-case basis, but they generally have their own parliament, and do not vote in USE elections.

2020.09.21 04:21 PremiumIOL One is too many: a wing departure analysis

I became slightly less stupid and read the "help" section of the NTSB accident report database and did some searches. This subreddit likes to talk a lot about how the wings fall off of Pipers and as someone who flies Pipers a little more often than Cessnas recently it made me paranoid so I did some digging. I couldn't run any statistics because these numbers are way too small.
Purpose: To evaluate in flight breakup in common GA aircraft due to previously unknown fatigue, crafts, or defective airframe.
Methods: I searched by selective key words in the NTSB database. These include "wing separated" or "stabilator separated", and "fatigue". I included fatigue in every search because the NTSB often comments about evidence of pre-existing fatigue and I wanted to make sure I was allocating these accurately. I read through a lot of reports but narrowing it down to instances where the airframe broke up in the air and the NTSB commented on fatigue helped a lot. I read through them to differentiate what I call the "insidious" causes for the accidents from the "attributable" causes. Essentially, an insidious accident happened despite standard maintenance and operating within aircraft limitations. Under Attributable causes were loss of control, flight into IMC, disorientation, operating outside the limitations, etc. I evaluated the PA28 variations, 172, 177, 182, and 210. I included the 177 and 210 to see if the cantilever wing made a difference.
Hypothesis: I expected to find a lot of cases of Pipers falling apart in VMC during normal cruise flight.
*Note: This number includes after the aircraft has collided with terrain.
I was able to find 2 instances of a maintained PA28 breaking apart during a normal operation. Of the thousands and thousands of PA28s that have ever flown, is that a lot? I'll let you decide. If you say no, it's understandable because it truly appears to be a freak occurrence. If you say yes, it's understandable because I was not able to find a record a Cessna product experiencing mid-air breakup for "no reason." I use that loosely because there's always a reason. For PA28, twice now the reason was wing spar fatigue in an area that's not easily evaluated by maintenance. Does it also appear that wings come off for any reason (including striking the ground post-crash) more often than Cessnas? Yes, but remember how many variants of PA28 there are.
Other interesting observations were it did indeed seem that 210s experienced more mid-air, pre-crash breakups when under stress beyond their limitations than 172s or 182s. The numbers are far too small for analysis but maybe that strut is for something other than looks.
Is staying out of bad weather and not maneuvering outside the limitations a safe bet? Probably, but there were some strange things like cylinders blowing and coating the windscreen with oil that are also quite unexpected and of course how many of us are going to make sure the nuts connecting the 172 struts are installed? I did see a lot of "EXCEEDED STRESS LIMITS OF AIRCRAFT".
Any feedback is appreciated, I'd like to know if I'm missing anything. This is really morbid but I think reviewing data makes us safer.

2020.09.21 04:20 Demosthenes34 The ins and outs of the most popular versions of RAID

RAID 0 - RAID 0 is for the people who want the best performance and are willing to sacrifice drive safety in order to implement it. This version of RAID takes your drives and puts them in a single volume, instead of having two 1.5 TB drives, you get one 3 TB volume. This sounds like it wouldn’t do anything until you realize that this sounds similar to dual channel memory. Instead of putting in and taking what you are doing out of a single drive, it takes half of each and puts it in or takes it out of both drives. While this does not always double the performance, it will make it much faster and for people who just want the fastest storage, it could be worth it. In order to implement RAID 0, you must have at least two drives. The main downside of this form of RAID is that if one drive fails, both fail, with no way to recover that data because there is no redundancy. Because of this, it is not advisable to to use this on the drive that your operating system is on.

RAID 1 - This nearly the opposite of RAID 0. It is for the people that need their data at all costs and are willing to sacrifice half of their total storage for it, although it does not change read or write speed in any dramatic way, it does make write speeds slower. RAID 1 needs at least two drives in order to be implemented. It takes your data and duplicates one drive, onto another one; this makes it to where you cannot use that drive for anything except redundancy. This makes it to where if one drive fails, there is always a back up that the drive can be rebuilt off of.

RAID 5 - This is the version of RAID that most people would benefit from the most. It takes the data and splits part of it across each of the three or more disks that is needed, while also repeating parts of data across all drives. This means that not much total storage is lost, and it increases performance, although not as much as RAID 0. RAID 5 is the most common version of RAID because it has a good balance of safety and speed. Even if one drive fails, it can be rebuilt; the only danger in this is that if another drive breaks while this is happening, all storage is lost.

RAID 10 - This is a combination of RAID 1 and RAID 0, hence the name RAID 10. It takes your data and repeats it across all disks, and takes data out of multiple disks at once as well, but since it has to put the same data across all disks, right performance is decreased and the total storage available is cut in half due to the mirroring of data. With that being said, it is very fault tolerant and is one of the safer forms of RAID. The minimum number of disks needed in order to have it is 4 so it is going to be pretty expensive, but for some people it would be the right option to use.

2020.09.21 04:18 usthehumans I want to build a PC for AI/ML, for recording music (Ableton) and 3D designing and gaming would be cool but not necessary. Budget:$700-$800.

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
I would like this to be under $700-$800
**When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy it.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
Extra info or particulars:
Nothing much! Thank you for your time. I’m sorry if it’s too much haha but I’m willing to compromise on the usage. Using it for AI/ML is the most important thing for me though, other stuff would be just icing on the cake for me.

2020.09.21 04:14 NealKenneth The Beatles are much, more more than a "boy band" like One Direction or The Backstreet Boys

An unpopular opinion

A few days ago, we had a big post blow up where people were asked to post their unpopular opinions about music. It was a cool post, and there were a lot of interesting opinions thrown out there. But there was one "opinion" in particular that deserves a thorough debunking.
The comment I'm debunking said that The Beatles were "nothing more than the Nsync, New Kids on the Block, or One Direction of their era."
Now, there's nothing wrong with disliking The Beatles or thinking they're boring or overrated or that they have bad voices etc. Those are all opinions. But this comment crosses a line, because this particular "opinion" is not really an opinion. To say they're "nothing more than [a boy band]" is a statement of fact. "Boy band" is not a subjective term, it is a clear, definable phenomena and the accusation can thus be proven or disproven.

So were The Beatles a boy band like Nsync or One Direction...yes or no?

The answer is, objectively, factually: No, absolutely not. The Beatles were much, much more than a boy band.
To make a comparison:
This comment about The Beatles is wrong for the same reason. The Beatles are not a boy band - they don't fit the definition of that word - and that is a FACT (not an opinion.)
Let's list some important differences between The Beatles and a boy band.

The Beatles are popular with both guys AND girls (not just girls)

Sure, some guys are into The Backstreet Boys. Some. But I struggle to think of any boy band that has succeeded with guys as well as girls, except in an ironic sense (like making memes.)
The Beatles were sorta similar to a boy band at first, in that during their initial breakthrough they had a huge amount of female fans. But let's not let history get blurry here. The Beatles also had huge numbers of male fans right away. For example, famously The Beatles bowl cut took over as a look for boys, and during the mid-60s there was an explosion of guys getting together to try and be the next big band.
Watch new programs or read articles from that time, and you'll get a ton of guys talking about why they're fans. Watch any of their concert footage and, yes, the camera will focus on the screaming girls but back there out-of-focus behind them is also a ton of boys.
This is not what happens with a boy band. For a boy band, the audience is nearly all girls, except for maybe one or two of their biggest hits. So unlike a boy band, The Beatles seem to have a widespread appeal. I would be surprised if the ratio swung strongly away from 50/50.

The Beatles have vastly outlasted their contemporary competitors, many of whom were boy bands

The Monkees, for example, were a boy band for boomers.
The Monkees actually outsold The Beatles for a year or two during the sixties as well, so they were very serious competition. Teen idols like David Cassidey of The Partridge Family had girls swooning all across the country too. In fact there were dozens of boy bands and teen idols during the sixties, who were all massively successful at that time, but now are reduced to (at best) one or two memorable hits.
If The Beatles were "nothing more than [a boy band]" then why have those bands faded away, while The Beatles live on?

The Beatles wrote their own songs, and played them too

Tbh this fact, on its own, is probably enough to disqualify them from being called a boy band.
The songs for boy bands are almost always written by producers/the studio/the label etc. The boys in the typical boy band are more like session singers, there to deliver the product with the help of session musicians. The Beatles were not like that at all. They used session musicians very sparingly, they sang their own songs, and never once did they have someone write a song for them.
So, at a fundamental level, The Beatles do not fit the formula for a boy band.

The Beatles did not dance

Another common trait of boy bands is that they dance, which is easier when you're not playing an instrument. But since The Beatles played instruments, they couldn't fall back on dance routines to catch the eyes of the girls in the audience. They had to get by on their sound.
To be fair - not all boy bands dance. But a vast majority do, so it's still worth noting.

The Beatles were not manufactured in the slightest

The Beatles chose each other one by one. It was not some studio or manager bringing together talented guys.
The Beatles were striking out blind, and little did they know that they were creating the formula. At the time, their was no such thing as a boy band. In fact boy bands follow a formula that is (in part) based upon what The Beatles did. So when you talk about a "boy band" The Beatles don't fit the mold, they are the mold.

The Beatles had the respect of the biggest names of their time

The Beatles had insanely talented musicians at their beck and call.
And it wasn't about money. Big names wanted to work with The Beatles because talent recognizes talent.
And they were on the next level of talent. You don't get into friendly feuds with both Bob Dylan and Brian Wilson at the same without serious talent, but The Beatles did that like they were taking out the laundry. So to fit the boy band theory, we'd expect to see similar things today - something like One Direction influencing back and forth with Kendrick Lamar and Tame Impala too.
But it just doesn't happen.

The Beatles influenced (and still influence) artists playing music way outside their genre and generation

You don't get to 3,000 covers of Yesterday without touching jazz, classical, rap, hip hop, every type of artist. And even in their time, The Beatles appearing on Ed Sullivan kick-started the careers of dozens of household names.
They released the #1 best-selling album of the 2000s, and they still get twenty-three million listeners monthly on Spotify, as a band that hasn't released a new song in fifty years. Let that sink in. For reference:
But it's not just listeners, it's also the stars. Billie Eilish has covered The Beatles. Drake has a Beatles tattoo.
How many Millenials and Zoomers do you think are out there covering New Kids on The Block, or getting tattoos of Nsync? The Beatles are still inspiring artists today.

After The Beatles broke up, their solo careers continued to be notable and newsworthy

John, Paul, George and Ringo all had multiple number one hits as solo artists. Paul McCartney has a song with 700 million streams that he released in 2015, over forty years after the breakup. If he's just a guy from some boomer boy band, how the hell is that possible?
The closest thing to long-term success from a "boy band" is Justin Timberlake. But even then, Justin is just one guy - not every single person in the band.
You can even take this in a dark direction. The Beatles had multiple assassination attempts, and Lennon actually died to one ten years after the breakup. That's not normal for a boy band. There's clearly more to the story.

The Beatles broke so much new ground that many of their accomplishments are overlooked

Let's look at George Harrison.
George Harrison organized the first-ever charity/benefit concert The Concert for Bangladesh, which set off a big trend, leading to things like LIVE AID. He was also essentially single-handedly responsible for exposing the western world to Indian music. He also personally financed the film The Life of Brian, which is a cult classic and considered one of the funniest films of all time.
All of these things are massive achievements that would normally define an artist's career. But because Harrison is a Beatle, they're like an afterthought.
So looking at all their it really reasonable to say they were "nothing more than the Nsync, New Kids on the Block, or One Direction of their era"?
It doesn't fit the formula. I like Justin Timberlake a lot, but I don't see him out there setting off decades-long trends like it's nothing. In fact, I struggle to think of even one achievement by a member of a boy band that is even comparable to The Beatles afterthought achievements.

Even now, it is near-impossible to think of another band that could be considered the best of all time

The easiest way to debunk all this is to ask a simple question.
Okay, so if The Beatles are just another One Direction, or Nsync or whatever...then who could be considered the best band of all time? On the original comment, someone asked this question, to which the commenter responded:
So, a grand total of three names are named.
And all three of those names are highly debatable:
But let's say it was true. Let's say we agreed on all three, and The Beatles are only the #4 best act of all time.
Let's say that they're #4, and that you can count all the better options on one hand...well then it's still pretty silly to say The Beatles are "nothing more than [a boy band.]" At worst, they would still be in the top five best bands of all time.

The Beatles are much, much more than a "boy band"

In conclusion, it is utterly ridiculous to put out the theory that The Beatles are just some generation's boy band, and it is easy to debunk. I could have gone on for pages and pages. It is not an "unpopular opinion" because it is not subjective, actually it is an objective claim that is factually, objectively false.
If you want the TL;DR version here it is:
So statistically, it is simply impossible to look at the data and conclude that The Beatles are a boy band fad that was born and will die with the middle/high/college schoolgirls of the Boomer generation. That theory does not fit the data. If anything, the evidence is increasing that The Beatles have entered some sort of Beethoven/Bach bubble that indicates they'll still be listened to hundreds of years from now. They are displaying a monumental level of staying power, the sort of talent that comes along only once every ten years or so at a minimum.
And again, that doesn't mean you have to like them.
Please do not seek out the comment I'm talking about, there are plenty of people who say stuff like this and it wouldn't be fair to pile on and blame it all on some random person. My goal with this post is not to respond to just one comment, but to debunk this entire idea. The idea that The Beatles are "nothing more than [a boy band]" is one of the most common criticisms of the band, and a debunking was long overdue.

2020.09.21 04:10 dnh234589 Robotic total station for newbie

I'm an engineer but not a surveyor. I'm interested in buying a cheap (old and basic is fine; a couple/few thousand dollars) robotic total station from ebay or something.
I just need to be able to roughly shoot (and ideally stake out) points myself when at a remote job site when the surveyor isn't around.
Looking for a robotic total station to achieve one-man operation. Super basic is fine (e.g. black and white LCD screen, no computer data transfer, old, scratched, whatever, ...)
I've used a (non-robotic) total station in college before, so I know the principles of operation. However I'm rather confused at all the options. I can't tell what I need and what I don't.
Can someone give me a list of the components I'd need (e.g. do I need a retro?)? Also cheap/old/basic make and model recommendations are super welcome!
Thanks!! :-)

Just remembered sleep mode exists, having no issues using it but from what I know on sleep mode it shuts down PC while keeping voltage to RAM to keep data,
I’m kind of pushing my CPU (R5 2600) with 3600Mhz cl16, Stable. SOC is on auto (but reported never go above 1.087) and DRAMv is 1.4v.
It worries me that it might degrade my RAM/CPU over time since fans are off?

HealthyWage is an interesting a few extra pounds from the quarantine you're trying to burn off? I personally want to lose 30 pounds, but needed a little extra motivation. Well, nothing motivates quite like money!
The way this website works is, you essentially place a "bet" (at least $100) that you can lose at least a certain amount of weight (at least 10% of your total body weight) within a given time frame (at least 6 months), and if you are successful, you will get rewarded with your initial investment + a bonus (they offered me around a 10% bonus). You can pay out the whole bet at once, or split over the time frame of the bet.
If you're wondering how they stay afloat, this company finances itself via the folks who failed to meet the terms of their own bet. You have to record yourself stepping on the scale via their highly-rated app (iOS/Android), so no cheating.
For folks like me who have strong will power but just need extra motivation, I highly recommend this site! I made a...questionably large bet personally ($3000 if I can't lose my extra pounds), but talk about a powerful motivator...
If you use my referral link to sign up and place your bet, you will get an extra $40 added to your bonus for winning your bet!
